IMPRESSIONISM
IN FRANCE

"A painting is not meant to be an encyclopedic inventory of a scene, but instead... a poem, an impression of how it makes you feel”

A Week of Impressionism

5,000€ - 6,200 €

May 14- 21 , 2025

Whether you’re yearning to reconnect to your inner creative, shake up your routine, or connect with like-minded people, this deep dive into Impressionism at a Chateau in France offers the ultimate opportunity to invest in your creative self. You will be surprised how much the removal of the normal responsibilities and burdens of the everyday, together with the right group of committed, inspired people, in a beautiful inspiring space combines to create a formidable alchemy.

We invite you to join us for a week for intensive creative nourishment, inspiringly beautiful atmospheres, and the transformative power of living in community at Chateau de Puy Vidal. The Lady of the Chateau Creative Team have developed a balanced and beautiful program who’s aim is to guide and accompany you to find your flow, your voice and your artistic path.

Our guest instructor, master painter, Peter Keegan, has created this week long course which deep dives into the precise techniques and approaches of the Impressionist masters from Monet to Cezanne to Sisley. Art history lectures combined with detailed breakdowns of the palate, pacing, composition and impressionist painting strategies each day empower you to tackle the magnificent French landscapers, interiors and still lifes surrounding you at the Chateau. The week is composed to offer you the chance to start and develop 4-6 painting studies. You will have these and many more photo references to continue once you return home, giving you a solid post-retreat focus. Whether an artist at the beginning of your journey, or a long time painter, we will meet you where you are and help you to where you want to be.

Your home for the week is a 800-year-old fortress that has evolved over time into a beautiful and comfortable castle named Château de Puy Vidal. Bountiful feasts, wine, music, candlelight, games, and more round out your creative nourishment, ending your days with relaxation and conversation. A family home and center for retreats such as these all throughout the summer season, you will feel the creative atmosphere everywhere, from our team composed of creatives of different genres, to the lovingly designed gardens, decor, music, tablescapes, and beautiful meals and evening activities all insisting on your highest effort, concentration and inspiration.

Friends are made, new ways of seeing are born, and you will come away from this week with your heart, mind, and soul feeling full.

Due to high demand, as well as to ensure a cohesive group dynamic, we invite you to apply below. Beginners Welcome!

A LETTER FROM YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Dear Artists,

When I first visited Chateau de Puy Vidal, I was overwhelmed by the visual splendor and inspiration that greeted me. From the sweeping views of the gardens that greet you at each turn to the unique clarity of light that fills the courtyard each day- Chateau Puy Vidal is the perfect backdrop to immerse ourselves in the authentic Impressionistic way of painting.

And since having led my first painting workshop there in 2024, I have come to regard it as the ideal place to retreat, connect and create. In fact, at the end of my first workshop there, I was filled with memories of my early days teaching at an art camp in the US for young artists. Here at Puy Vidal I have found the ultimate art camp for sophisticated adults. The creative team and family, the dedication of every resource and element for the inspiration and benefit of the creative process, and the peace and quiet offered by the beautiful countryside surrounding the Chateau all make for the perfect artistic retreat.

Following in the footsteps of some of the most important and influential artists in the history of art, we will explore the exact techniques and practices used by some of the great French Impressionists- Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Cezanne, and Renoir surrounded by the Chateau as our daily inspiration.

My aim for this week of painting is to give you an experience as close as possible to the authentic approach of painting Impressionist paintings. From learning about how the Impressionists adopted unique color harmonies to how they used specific brush techniques or the exact ways, they began and built up their painting, plus the strategies they used to capture the stunning effects of light. The week is one of creative discovery, learning, and excellent painting. Time will also be spent sharing how the Impressionists changed the course of art, some of my favorite personal stories about each artist, and the important scientific development of colour pigment and industry that helped them with their unique creative mission.

During the week, we will spend our days painting both outside, en plein air, in the diffused French light, and in the well-equipped Chateau studio, capturing the essence of springtime in France. The evenings will be spent conversing and sharing our love and passion for painting, all whilst enjoying delicious chef-cooked French meals by candlelight.
It is a feast for all the parts of the creative soul.

With me painting alongside you, demonstrating the Impressionistic principles and techniques whilst supporting you with each of your paintings, you can expect to produce between 4 – 6 original oil paintings of varying subject matters, including roses, irises, and other early summer flowers, far-reaching views over the gardens or the architecture of the Chateau itself.

This workshop is suitable for all painters of all abilities who have any interest or curiosity in painting and who wish to study the Impressionistic approach. I simply cannot wait to return to Puy Vidal for this indulgent week of painting.

I very much look forward to painting with you very soon,

Peter Keegan

Welcome to the Chateau!

Meet your hosts, settle into your chambre, and meet your fellow artists over a light lunch. Take a tour of the Chateau, grounds and your Art studio for the week ahead.

Once everyone arrives, in the early evening, we will have a Champagne Reception and Introductions before our first dinner together.

May 15

Choosing your Composition

We will each make a start on 2 different paintings of the Chateau gardens and far-reaching views over the French countryside, paying particular attention to creating a strong pictorial composition and design.

May 16

Impressionist Brush Techniques
and Development

Much of what the Impressionists achieved in their paintings was due to their unique methods of applying the paint to the canvas. This day will be spent learning and practicing these special painting techniques.

This afternoon, we will start on one to two more paintings.

May 17

Regional Exploration

We will venture out to our local picturesque village of La Rochefoucauld, a 10 min drive from the Chateau. We will explore the shops and the small farmers market in the morning. Then stop for lunch together at a riverside restaurant.

After lunch, we will tour the town's famous historic Chateau de la Rochefoucauld, rich with history and legend. Opportunities for sketching abound.

May 18

Impressionist Studio Development

Following the footsteps of Claude Monet, we will return to our 2-4 paintings starts and bring them to the studio. This is when we begin to paint wet on dry, to achieve the depth and luminosity of the masters.

May 19

Capturing the Light

Continue to develop your works in studio.

May 20

Finishing and Final Review

Our last day together will be spent finishing your paintings. There are also opportunities to get started on new works before we wrap up.

What Our Guests Are Saying...

"I first discovered The Lady of the Chateau on YouTube while searching for art retreats. I’m a painter and love to travel and meet other like minded individuals. Needless to say the beautiful photos of Chateau de Puy Vidal immediately captured my imagination. But, more importantly, the story of the Leach family (Americans) and how they dreamed of, found, and restored the chateau, made me dream of being there too. So, I signed up for the Chasing the Light painting retreat in May of 2024.

It turned out to be so much more than I hoped for. Not only was the chateau and it’s grounds extraordinarily beautiful, with each room tastefully done and brimming with history, but the people (Julia, Caroline, Penelope, Maruca, Robert and staff) were incredibly kind and attentive. In fact, I have never attended a function where the hosts were more considerate about peoples overall comfort and food considerations. Finally, the fully equipped art studio, which included paint and all supplies, was simply beyond my expectations. And I learned so much from our teacher, Peter Keegan, an exceptional painter.

My experience at Chateau de Puy Vidal is one I will cherish forever. And I hope I am fortunate enough to go back some day."
